LAKERS!

by Justin Larson on February 14, 2012 · 0 comments

Tucked away in the heart of the Black Hills, lay some of the best ice fishing holes in the Midwest.  Last week I had the opportunity to take in some fishing on these lakes. For the past several years Lee Harstad (Deadwood Chamber) has put on an ice fishing hosting in the Black Hills.  This year the likes of Gary Howey (host of Outdoor Adventures), Larry Myhre, Ted Takasaki and a handful of other outdoor journalists and photographers attended.
We headed to Pactola Lake, 25 miles south of Deadwood along Hwy. 385, to find some Lake Trout.  Alex Jessen and Tyler English of Dakota Dream Outdoors graciously guided us to the “honey hole.” Jeff Samsel, Jeff Samsel Outdoors, reeled in a nice 10.8 pounder.  It was a great 20 minute fight and with some help from the guides gaffing it once it got close, Jeff was able to put this nice Trout on the ice.We spent about 6 hours on the ice and reeled in around 16 Lake Trout and a couple Brown Trout.  We worked the same couple of points the whole day, jigging shiners in about 70ft of water.

The 2nd day most of the crew headed to Deerfield Lake, located just north of Hill City, to try and find some nice perch.  The group had great success as they reeled in well over 100 perch for the day.  I took a couple guys coyote hunting in the southern Black Hills so I wasn’t able to experience this great day of fishing.  No live bait is allowed on Deerfield Lake but the plastic minnows seemed to be working well.

Great weather, great fishing and great fellowship was had by all!
